A plastic clothes hanger is made through a controlled process that begins with garment requirements and ends with molding, component assembly, inspection, and packing. While the finished product looks simple, its shoulder shape, width, hook position, body thickness, clip design, and material distribution all affect how well it supports clothing.

Industrial hanger production differs from making a basic wire hanger by hand. A retail or garment-industry hanger must remain dimensionally consistent across a large order, work with the intended garment, and withstand packing, transportation, display, and repeated handling.

Step 1: Define the Garment Application

The manufacturer first determines what the hanger needs to hold. A hanger for a T-shirt does not require the same shoulder profile as one for a structured coat, while trousers need clips or a bar rather than wide shoulder supports.

The initial specification may include:

  • Adult or child size

  • Overall width

  • Shoulder angle and thickness

  • Top, bottom, suit, lingerie, shoe, or towel application

  • Fixed or swivel hook

  • Plastic or metal hook

  • Trouser bar

  • Fixed or adjustable clips

  • Anti-slip components

  • Color and surface appearance

  • Size markers

  • Logo position

  • Packing method

A correct specification reduces the risk of producing a strong hanger that still performs poorly with the intended clothing.

Step 2: Develop the Hanger Structure

The body must distribute garment weight without excessive bending. Manufacturers consider the cross-section, ribs, joints, shoulder ends, and the connection around the hook.

Simply adding more plastic is not always the best solution. Uncontrolled thickness can increase material use, cooling time, unit weight, and shipping cost. Structural ribs and carefully designed load paths may create better stiffness with more efficient material distribution.

For retail display, designers also check how the hanger aligns with neighboring products on a rack. Hook orientation, body symmetry, and consistent hanging height affect the appearance of an entire clothing row.

Step 3: Prepare the Mold

Most industrial plastic hangers are formed in a metal injection mold. The mold defines the hanger’s dimensions, texture, ribs, logo area, and many functional details.

Tooling design must account for:

  • Plastic flow through the cavity

  • Gate position

  • Air release

  • Cooling

  • Shrinkage

  • Part removal

  • Visible parting lines

  • Possible undercuts

  • Production cycle stability

A custom mold requires greater initial investment than selecting an existing hanger model. Buyers should therefore confirm expected volume, product life, and exclusivity needs before opening new tooling.

Step 4: Mold the Plastic Body

During injection molding, plastic material is heated until it can flow, injected into the closed mold, held under controlled pressure, and cooled until the hanger retains its shape.

Process consistency matters because excessive heat, insufficient filling, uneven cooling, or unstable pressure can lead to warping, sink marks, weak joints, flash, or color variation.

After removal, excess gate material and sharp edges should be trimmed. The hanger body is then checked for symmetry, flatness, surface defects, and dimensional accuracy.

Step 5: Add Hooks, Clips, and Accessories

Some hangers are made entirely from plastic. Others use a metal hook, swivel mechanism, trouser clips, foam covers, size markers, or security components.

Each added component creates another possible failure point. Clips should move smoothly and hold fabric without producing unacceptable marks. Hooks must remain securely connected and should not rotate unintentionally unless a swivel design is specified.

Step 6: Test the Finished Hanger

A production sample should be tested with the actual garment rather than evaluated empty.

Useful checks include:

  1. Garment fit

  2. Shoulder support

  3. Body deflection under load

  4. Hook security

  5. Clip holding performance

  6. Sharp edges or flash

  7. Color consistency

  8. Logo clarity

  9. Stacking behavior

  10. Carton packing and transportation

The required test load should reflect the garment category. A lingerie hanger and a heavy coat hanger should not be assessed by the same criterion.
